Voices of Freedom: An Evening of Spoken Word

Next date: Friday, February 13, 2026 | 08:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Voices of Freedom: An Evening of Spoken Word features premier spoken word poets from around the country gathered for a special night celebrating Black History Month. From the cultural expression of Langston Hughes and the Beat Poets of the 1950s to modern rap and hip-hop music, performance poetry follows the trend of rhythmic engagement with listeners and is meant to be spoken aloud with expression and movement that reflects each poem’s meaning. Join former Orlando Poet Laureate, Shawn Welcome, emerging local school talent and nationally renowned spoken word artists for a 90-minute showcase that exemplifies the power of performance poetry. The evening concludes a weeklong spoken word residency and workshops facilitated by Shawn Welcome in three Orange County high schools. Emerging poets who participated in the workshops will also be among the show’s performers.
